Domaine Clos Des Rochers, Riesling Domaine et tradition 2016

Levendig, hoog in de zuren, fijne mineraliteit, sappige citoen, rinse appel, stevige kruidig, body, vol, perzik, limoen, lange afdronk.

Domaine Clos des Rochers Ahn Palmberg Riesling GPC 2018

Lime

There are many lime variants in the Hard Seltzer category. This one resembles the sugar-free bubble drink with the number 7. Fresh and thirst-quenching.

Grapefruit

Particularly thirst-quenching, no sugar sweetener, pure nature and you can taste it. A fine bitterness of the grapefruit and balance the carbonation.

Raspberry

If you like small red fruit, this may be the drink of choice!
Refined bubbles have a harmonious taste with the juicy and slightly sour to slightly sweet raspberry flavor.

Mango

Pure taste, full and very fresh ripe mango. Reaches refined and not overpowered.

stelz try out – STËLZ Hard Seltzer

(@stelz_int)

Silver Ocean Seltzer, lifestyle in a bottle!

The Hard Seltzers are booming, Ready to Drink category is going sky high and at this moment it looks like there is no stop too it.

Within the European market the market share of these fruity adult beverages is becoming more and more. Most of the available data is from the US market. As ‘State Side’ is the largest market has a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 128% a year, this will also be the case in Europe as a ‘early adopter’.

So it was time for me to get in touch with several brands and investigate this ‘millennials’ market and do some ‘research’, well actually by tasting all of them!

A drink for the conscious consumer and with a vision for the future.

We mainly know Hard Seltzers in cans, from the supermarket or can be ordered online. But at Silver Ocean, 3 young men took a different approach.
All three sporty and busy with balance in life, good food but also enjoying a (calorie-filled) beer….there had to be another way!?

After a lot of tasting and experimenting with recipes, they started with a small batch and with success.
But these three men don’t just want to sell a Hard Selter, they like to see it in a broader perspective, making a positive impact on the world.

With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?

With Lesley Daris. One of the three co-founders of Silver Ocean Seltzer.

Groepsfoto-2.0-1536x1265.jpg

Great to speak to you Lesley, what is your background in the adult beverage/rtd industry?

All of us have no prior (professional) experience within this industry. Our experience is more first hand, from the other side of the bar. We’ve always been interested in good concepts and products though.

Silver Ocean Seltzer_logo Shopify.png

How would you describe your Hard Seltzer range?

Silver Ocean Seltzer is a premium craft seltzer, Made the right way; Artisanally brewed with champagne yeast and cane sugar. This results in a refreshing, light and crisp drink with a cohesive taste profile. I would say it’s quite different from most of the premixed drinks within the Hard Seltzer category.

Tasting notes Dennis

All Seltzers are really very pure! A purity that I have not yet encountered with others. The fruit flavors are refined and match the surface without being disturbing.

With the cherry flavor it looks like you just bit into a small cherry, pure and pleasant.

The grapefruit is what you would expect from a grapefruit, but again modest, refined and beautifully fresh.

The range of three also includes a special flavor, namely Guava!

The Guava originates from Central America and tastes fruity and slightly floral, like a cross between a strawberry and a pear. And that’s exactly how this Guava tastes, great, special, unique and incredibly fresh.

Yes I noticed Silver Ocean is bottled and not canned, could you explain your vision on this?

We are really presenting it as a premium brand for the conscious consumer. This is all due to the fact that we can’t keep up with the big brewers in terms of quantity, so we don’t, we focus on absolute quality. Most Hard Seltzers available in The Netherlands, the marketing is aimed at students: it is sold in supermarkets and packaged in a can. That is not our way of working. We consciously go for a premium positioning, think of a subtle refreshing taste, bottled in a beautiful bottle and linked to a social purpose. That’s why we focus on the higher segment of the hospitality industry.

That’s a great vision and strategy, why are you in the ready-to-drink beverage (rtd) industry?

To raise the bar and build a premium brand with well thought about quality products.

Thanks clear, but how do you see the future of rtd beverages?

I see the category expanding, although shifting more towards the low and no alcohol side. I foresee many crossovers between categories and brands. For example Fever Tree moving into the Hard Seltzer category and the rise of RTD Spritzers. As a whole this boosts the whole rtd category forward in terms of quality and innovation.

And that’s exactly what this category needs and you guys are doing a great job! Do you wish to add something to this interview?

Just a little bit of own marketing…….If you’re looking for a good Hard Seltzer with a great additional social cause, check out Silver Ocean Seltzer!

Cheers on that Lesley and again thanks for your time and I will following you guys with great pleasure in the future!

Viper – Hard Seltzer

The Hard Seltzers are booming, Ready to Drink category is going sky high and at this moment it looks like there is no stop too it.

Within the European market the market share of these fruity adult beverages is becoming more and more. Most of the available data is from the US market. As ‘State Side’ is the largest market has a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 128% a year, this will also be the case in Europe as a ‘early adopter’.

So it was time for me to get in touch with several brands and investigate this ‘millennials’ market and do some ‘research’, well actually by tasting all of them!

With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?

Yara Pelzer, brand manager Viper Hard Seltzer and Kornuit in the Netherlands.

Great to meet you Yara and wonderful you want to participate in an interview, what is your background in the adult beverage/rtd industry?

For the past two years I have been working at Koninklijke Grolsch (part of Asahi Europe & International). After some time at other drink-related companies, this is my first time working for alcoholic beverages. I started as brand manager for the local Dutch lager brand Kornuit, and when the international introduction of Viper came along, I had the opportunity to launch Viper Hard Seltzer in the Netherlands.

That all sound very cool, let’s go direct to the product, how would you describe your Hard Seltzer range?

Viper is inspired on the new booming drink category – HARD SELTZERS – born in the US market. We invested a lot of effort in bringing the idea forward and created the ultimate refreshment – well balanced with a hint of fruit flavor (e.g. lime) and a bite of alcohol. Different than most hard seltzers on the US market, Viper is a brewed hard seltzer, which produces a more balanced drink, with a unique tasting experience. Viper is a sparkling water with a bite of alcohol and a hint of fruit flavour, perfect to enjoy a great time with your friends. On a hot summer evening at a park or any other relaxing time – whenever – Viper always gives you the ultimate refreshment. It is 96 kcal per can/bottle, does not contain any artificial colours and preservatives. Also, Viper is gluten free, because we don’t use ingredients that can be source for gluten.

In addition to cans, Viper also chooses to offer the product in bottle. This drink is ideal for on trade and retail, where the Dutch consumer relatively often consumes from a glass bottle instead of a can, which makes it perfect for a hot summer evening in the park or on a terrace. Viper Hard Seltzer is presented with the pay-off ‘sparkling water with a bite’. The bite refers to the snake (‘Viper’), which can also be seen in the brand logo. Viper is launched in two flavours; cranberry and lime.

Tasting notes Dennis

Both are fresh and have a refreshing character, really ‘thirst-quenching’. The lime is really like that (1,2,3,4,6,) 7 soda drink but without all the sugar and with a little bit of subtitle cinnamon in the end. The cranberry gives a little bit sweet nose at first, the flavors of fresh cranberry is pickup quite fast and the bubbles catch up, nice when you like a boost of red fruit in the summer!

And Why are you, Yara, in the canned adult beverage industry?

Good question; As the daughter of a bar owner, I grew up with beer. Not drinking it (back then), but seeing others drink it. It showed me that beer brings people together; it is a product that connects people and let them have fun. I’ve always had a connection to the beer industry and to Grolsch too. Working at the pub for over 8 years, tapping Grolsch, gave me a connection to the brewery even before I started working here. The good part is that I am working for two brands (Viper and Kornuit) that personally fit me better, while I’m still working for the brewery I had this connection with. Regarding the ‘can’ question; For me I think it’s just that Hard Seltzer and beer is also served in cans.

How do you see the future of canned adult beverages?

With people being on the move, drinking outside, going places, I think this industry will be growing. Cans are light and easy to bring with you while you’re on your way. In the Netherlands we are a ‘bottle drinking country’, most beer we will consume from crates and bottles but can consumption seems to grow. Looking at the trend of canned craft beers and also Hard Seltzers, I believe the canned alcoholic beverages will only be growing more.

Cranberry - Viper

Do you wish to add something to this interview?

Just some shameless self-promotion; Try a Viper Hard Seltzer when you see it in the supermarket or on a terrace! Cheers!

Thanks Yara, the pleasure was all mine.

Hard Seltzer ”Spijked&” from Royal Swinkels Family Brewers

The Hard Seltzers are booming, Ready to Drink category is going sky high and at this moment it looks like there is no stop to it.

In this article I will guide you through another brand called Spijked& from the Royal Swinkels Family Brewers. The brand name Spijked& is based on the English word ‘Spike’, which means alcoholizing sparkling water. In the US, this type of drink is also known as a ‘Spiked Seltzer’. The ‘ij’ in Spijked& shows the Dutch origin of the brand.

Their slogan is “More than a Hard Seltzer” and with their maritime look, the brand takes this by heart. They have four flavors. Next to Cherry, Lemon, Wild Berry they also have a non-general flavor, Seaweed. This Seaweed variant is, in addition to being surprisingly tasty, an integral part of the positioning of the Spijked& brand; “More than a Hard Seltzer”.

With this new and groundbreaking collaboration with The Seaweed Company they are working on a mission to draw attention to sustainable seaweed cultivation. Seaweed plays an important role in the recovery of the ocean and for every can of Spijked& sold, a new piece of seaweed farm the size of an A4 is contributed to further develop seaweed cultivation. Let’s start the interview!

With whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?

Hi, my name is Laurie Driesen. I am 27 years old and currently live in Eindhoven, NL. I work for Royal Swinkels Family Brewers and I am the Brand Manager for the Hard Seltzer brand Spijked&.

Great to meet you Laura! What is your background in the adult beverage/rtd industry?

I started to work for Royal Swinkels Family Brewers in November 2019. My journey into world of alcoholic beverages started as a trade marketeer for our 8.6 beer brand. Half a year later I became part of our Export Marketing team. My responsibilities were further extended as a Brand Manager for the Hard Seltzer brand Spijked& and some of our other beer brands.

How would you describe your Hard Seltzer range?

Spijked& hard seltzers are an alcoholic sparkling water combining great taste, refreshment, and a commitment to restoring ocean health. Spijked& takes natural mineral water from the wells underneath our brewery in Lieshout, carbonates it lightly and adds a perfect balance of five-times distilled alcohol reaching an ABV of 4.7% This gives Spijked& its pure, clean, and crisp taste. We then blend this with natural flavours for a refreshing taste experience with a kick. Spijked& is the perfect product for those who are conscious about their lifestyle habits and choices with only 65 Kcal and less than 1 gram of sugar per 250 ml.

Our products come in four great tasting flavors: Lemon, Cherry, Wild Berries and the first of its kind: Seaweed. Additionally, we are completely vegan-friendly and gluten free.

That’s sound great Laura, thanks for the samples, I have tasted them and here are my notes;

In general I find your Hard Seltzers refreshing and the aroma’s are well balanced and not too much. I have tasted other Hard Seltzers were the aroma’s are overwhelming and not in balance with the bubbly structure.

Lemon. Fresh lemons that pop out of the can but with a subtle touch. Thirst quenching to the last sip!

Cherry. It is like you taste a fresh cherry pie with ripe cherries on there, sweet and sour, great bubbly consistency of freshness with beautiful red fruit!

Wild Berry. This one is truly wild! Again the softness and a slightly sweet touch of blackberries and strawberry in the core.

Seaweed. At first the taste is a little bit to the sweet side and before you know it the real seaweed taste. Green, fresh and very well balanced! Not the most obvious, but a real uninque

Why are you in the canned adult beverage industry?

Hard Seltzers suit the modern consumer who is making increasingly conscious decisions that fit a particular lifestyle and set of beliefs. We always strive to stay relevant to the consumers and we believe that the trend hard seltzers draw its popularity from will be permanent and continue to evolve.

What do you think is the distinctive character of Spijked& Seltzer?

With Spijked& positioning, hooked on clear waters, we have set out with a commitment to restore ocean health. For every can of Spijked& sold, we contribute to a piece of seaweed farm the size of an A4. We do this in collaboration with The Seaweed Company, a company that is committed to the recovery of ocean health by establishing sustainable seaweed farms and value chains. Seaweed makes an important contribution to the recovery of the oceans, because it absorbs a lot of CO2 and enriches marine biodiversity. Most consumers value sustainability and will contribute to restoring ocean health by buying Spijked&. Linking the sustainability aspect through collaboration with The Seaweed Company also fits in with Swinkels Family Brewers mission to pass on our family business even better to the next generations. For this it is important to look at the long term and to invest in these kinds of sustainability initiatives

Why in a can and not in a bottle?

Aluminum cans are a very sustainable beverage package. Choosing for cans as primary packaging has given Spijked& a terrific opportunity to make a distinctive design and space to communicate our purpose. Cans are also a very convenient to store in the fridge and to bring to with you to visit friends or to a party. Next to this, cans are also one of the best packaging to preserve quality of the liquid and not be affected by sunlight.

How do you see the future of canned adult beverages?

I believe canned alcoholic beverages are the future and will increase in popularity among our customers and consumers even further. The reason for this is the convenience the cans bring, as they are easy to take along by hand. Also, cans can be recycled and the recycling process for cans is well established in most countries.

Thanks Laura for your time, the pressure was all mine!

Innovation and pioneering in the port wine sector -Taylor’s Port & Croft Port are doing it!

Port, everybody knows it, but how is the image of this quality adult beverage of 18% to 20% from around the Porto area in Portugal?

I spoke to Adrian Bridge, CEO of The Fladgate Partnership, the company behind Taylor’s port, Croft Port and many more high quality brands. It is also in the tourism and distribution, about this development and the future of RTD drinks for the whole sector.

Could you tell a bit more about The Fladgate Partnership.

The original company of the group is Taylor’s Port, which was founded in 1692. However, in 2001 it acquired Croft Port, which was founded in 1588 and celebrated its 430th anniversary in 2018. With its other port wine houses (Fonseca Port and Krohn Port) The Fladgate Partnership is a leading player in producing special category Port, which it sells in over 105 countries.

What is your background in the beverage industry of port?

I moved to Portugal in 1994 to grow the Taylor’s and Fonseca Port brands in the UK and USA.  In 1998, became CEO of the Taylor Fonseca Group, spearheading its expansion by acquiring valuable industry assets, including Croft and Delaforce Port, and forming an enlarged group called The Fladgate Partnership.

I’ve been at the forefront of innovation and change in the Port industry. In 2008 was responsible for the creation of rosé Port, the first new category for a generation, and launched the super-premium Port segment with the high-profile release of Taylor’s Scion in 2010.  In 2014 expanded the luxury gifting market with a series of 50-year-old Single Harvest Ports.

In 2010 created The Yeatman, Porto’s first world class luxury hotel, later adding two more iconic properties to the group’s portfolio, The Vintage House and Hotel Infante Sagres. In 2020 opened the World of Wine, a major cultural, gastronomic and retail complex. I am the mentor of the Porto Protocol, a global climate change initiative.

The Yeatman Hotel, Porto

What was the main reason to start this new products in a can?

Innovate and pioneer in the port wine sector. Broaden our customer base by satisfying consumers’ needs, while never compromising the outstanding quality of our Port Wines.

Who is your main target group with these cans?

Everyone looking for a refreshing, delicious and informal drink. The PORTONIC in a can will surprise and delight also those who are not familiar Port.

Taylor's Port announces the first ready-to-drink white Port & tonic in a can. - Taylor's Port
Taylor’s Chip Dry & Tonic

What is your future goal for these products?

Now we want to consolidate the distribution of Taylor’s Chip Dry & Tonic and Croft Pink & Tonic in the different markets where we are present, and with it demonstrate the versatility and range of Port Wine.

Do you have plans to expand, have more products in cans of other alternative packages?

For the moment we are totally focused in promoting the cans we are just launching.

How would you describe your ready to drink beverage in a can?

The first pre-mixed and ready-to-drink Port & Tonic is presented in a convenient, practical, and elegant 250ml can, 100% recyclable, easy to carry and store. It is perfect to enjoy in a moment of relaxation, at home or outdoors, in the countryside or on the beach, with friends and family. Its volume was designed to be easy to transport and to chill.

Taylor’s Chip Dry & Tonic and Croft Pink & Tonic are wonderfully fresh and vibrant, with delicious flavors in a dry and very attractive finish. It is delicious and very practical to enjoy anytime and anywhere.

How do you see the future of ready to drink in a can in comparison to traditional products?

The Portonic ready to drink is easy to carry, versatile and ready to be enjoyed anytime, anywhere. It does not replace the traditional products but allows new moments of consumption reaching new consumers.

This project was challenging as we wanted to guarantee the best balanced and the most pleasing and refreshing drink.  We have done our own special dry tonic water to get the perfect ratio of a perfect Port and Tonic.

The result is a delicious drink, bursting with character, that will surprise and delight everyone.

Some tasting notes;

An amazing taste sensation of red fruits. Think of raspberries, strawberries, a subtitle hint of mint and an aftertaste of lemons. All combined with the soft bitterness of the tonic.

Taylor’s Chip Dry & Tonic

Refreshing and round on the palette, little hint of mint and soft lemon peel. All very good in balance with all the components of this Dry port/ Tonic!
